We live in a world today where taking prescription medications is commonplace. It’s not unusual to be watching television in the evening with your family only to be greeted with a commercial advertising one of the new arthritis or cholesterol drugs.

Granted that there are times when medication appears to be the only thing that seems able to cure what ails you, but it might be worth considering looking at the source of the health problem as opposed to simply treating the symptoms.

One way to do this is to introduce more raw foods into your diet. Raw foods are obviously rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients but there is much more to them than that. Raw foods can actually help to treat many different, even chronic conditions.

Diabetes is an illness that affects millions of people each year. It can lead to days missed from work, sick days at school and in some severe cases, hospitalization and even death. Treating diabetes has long involved the use of insulin. Many people now believe that a diet rich in raw foods could also help to control the severity of the disease.

Arthritis is another ailment that a vast majority of Americans, especially the elderly, suffer from. There are different types of arthritis but the symptoms are generally very similar regardless of the type. The person suffers with pain from inflamed joints. Arthritis can affect a person’s life so deeply that they are unable to get out of bed in the morning. Many people are missing the best things in life because they are immobile due to their arthritis. With a raw food diet this can drastically change. Researchers have concluded that diet can have a direct impact on arthritis. With the damaging side-effects of the medications used to treat the disease it’s easy to see why finding an alternate therapy is so important.

When you do decide to eat more raw foods in an effort to treat an illness, you do need to do your research. In the case of diabetes, it’s simply not enough to be eating more apples and peaches. Those foods have a high natural sugar content, which can actually lead to a more serious case of diabetes. Instead, the diabetic will want to focus on other raw food.

With the arthritis patient, they too will need to do a bit of homework to see what will work best for them. Some foods can aggravate arthritic joints more, regardless of whether or not they are raw foods. A quick visit to the doctor or some time spent on a few online medical sites should garner enough information for the patient to begin adopting new eating habits that include raw foods.

Your health is more important than anything else is, because without it you truly have nothing. If you can eat better and feel the benefits in your health that’s something you certainly should be pursuing. Add raw foods to your diet and feel the difference it can make in the way you feel.

There are more advantages to the raw food diet than you might think. Consider the compelling and sometimes surprising reason.

Spend Less Money

You may actually spend less money when you eat raw food. There are several reasons for this including the fact that on a raw food diet you aren’t paying for any pots, pans or electricity used in operating a stove or microwave. Another method of saving is that with a raw food diet you may actually find that you eat less food. Raw food is more filling than cooked food and as a result of eating less you may find that you purchase less.

More Flavor

Raw foods have more flavors than their cooked counterparts do. When you cook food you are not only cooking out many of the nutrients but also much of the flavor disappears as well. That also means that you’ll not be using the same amounts of salt and sugar to which you’ve become accustomed.

Less Prep Time

Raw foods take much less time to prepare. Many people spend hours each week preparing the foods for their families. When you consider that most people eat three meals a day, this can add up to many hours each month. With raw food, this will be greatly reduced and it frees up time for you to do other things. You can also have other family members pitch into the raw food preparation to make it a family affair.

Builds Immune System

With raw food, you are less likely to become ill. Many people who eat substantial amounts of processed foods are actually doing their body more harm than good. A raw food diet helps your body by building up your natural immune system. People who eat a diet that is high in raw foods often suffer fewer colds, fewer cases of influenza, as well as a reduced rate of cancer cases. This can also save you money in that you don’t have to go to the doctor as often and there is a decreased need to purchase prescription medications.

Most people aren’t ready to give up all cooked food in favor of a raw food diet. You can begin to incorporate some raw foods into your diet on a daily basis. You can begin slowly with perhaps a serving of raw carrots instead of boiled or a large salad in place of a baked potato. By doing this bit by bit you’ll soon be eating more and more raw foods and reaping many of the benefits.

When you are searching for a menu that is high in nutritional value and low in preservatives and additives, consider an organic raw food diet. Raw food has become the focal point of many people’s diets because they recognize all of the benefits of eating food in its natural form. Add an organic growing environment to that equation and you have a diet rich in everything that is good for you.

The basis of eating any diet that is comprised primarily of raw food is that you are not cooking the vitamins and minerals out of the food. The food is eaten just as it’s grown and you reap all of the benefits of that process.

An important consideration, though, is how is that food grown? If it’s in an environment where pesticides are used, the raw foods nutritional value should come into question.

Many farmers follow a strict regime of using chemical products to both protect and enhance their crop. These chemicals are designed to keep the plants free of bugs and to help them grow to a bigger potential. They are used on everything from carrots to tomatoes; apples, pears, and many other fruits are treated as well. This means that even though you are consuming the food in its most natural state you are also taking in all of those chemicals. They take home in the cells of your bodies and can cause all types of health problems. Everything from influenza to cancer has been attributed to pesticides.

It’s therefore important to seek out raw foods that are organically grown. This means that the food has been grown on a farm where the farmer did not treat the plants or the soil with any type of chemicals.

Finding these types of raw foods isn’t as difficult as it once was. It used to be that a person had to wander near and far to locate quality organic foods. That isn’t the case anymore. You can now find many fresh raw foods that are organically grown in your local supermarket.

The cost of this type of raw foods is a bit higher than traditionally grown raw foods. The health benefits are many and do need to be taken into consideration though. It’s important to remember that your health is worth much more than the savings you might enjoy when purchasing products of lesser quality.

Preparing raw foods that are organically grown is the same as those traditionally grown. You can store them for several days and perishable items need to be kept in the refrigerator as suggested. It is best to use them as soon as possible as the taste is always best when the items are fresh.

Eating raw foods is certainly good for you but if you want to take it one step farther consider purchasing those that are organically grown. You’ll be doing all you can to ensure that your family is eating the best foods possible for them.

In recent years there has been a big buzz around the medical community regarding the benefits of raw food. People have begun jumping on the raw food diet and are really seeing and feeling how it is affecting their bodies. With this comes the realization that by incorporating raw foods into the diets of their children, they can begin to enjoy the benefits at a very early age.

Children can be very choosy eaters though and it can be a struggle to get them to eat anything new. When a young child is accustomed to eating cooked foods, the difference in taste and texture with raw food can take some time for adaptation.

There are some things that a parent can do to help their child embrace a raw food diet:

Have the child help with preparation. Children love to do things that they view as grown-up tasks. They see preparing meals this way. Most children are not let near the food preparation area mainly because the parent is concerned with the child injuring him- or herself. This is rarely a concern with a raw food diet. Although you will still be using sharp utensils such as knives, there is no fear of them being scalded or burned. Since the raw food diet does not involve the cooking process, the chances that your child may be injured are greatly diminished. They’ll love taking part in the preparation process and they’ll likely be more inclined to want to eat the food they’ve helped make.

Serve them more fresh fruit. Most children love eating bananas, grapes and berries. If you explain that these are healthy food and offer them even more choices, they are likely to embrace them. Small pieces of apple, orange segments or a slice of watermelon becomes a treat to the child. Don’t be surprised if they begin to ask for more of these foods and less cookies and sugar filled treats.

Pack a picnic filled with raw foods. Children see outings as adventures and if you combine a raw food meal with a fun experience they are more likely to have a positive attitude regarding the food. Consider taking them to the zoo or a local outdoor swimming pool. After they’ve run around and worked up a good and healthy appetite you can bring out the picnic basket and serve them the raw foods. They’ll be so famished that they’ll welcome the food. They’ll also bring up the outing every time you serve the same raw foods at home. It’s a great way to introduce them to raw foods.

Although children may take longer to welcome the change in their diet than the adults in the house, it’s important to stick with it. Praise them each time they eat raw foods and explain how healthy they look to you. They may still ask for something from their old diet from time to time but the most important thing is to be patient with them. If you can take the time to work with them on improving their diets while they are young, you are setting the foundation for a life filled with good eating habits. Children who eat raw foods while they are young are much more likely to continue doing the same thing when they are older.

Most of us do everything in our power to make certain that those we love are eating a well balanced diet. We go out of our way to prepare foods that reap the most nutritional benefits. In an effort to do that, many people are turning to raw food diets to improve the way they look and feel.

What many people don’t put a great deal of consideration into is the diet of their pets. Although you may think you are choosing the best dry pet food available you are still feeding your dog and cat things they don’t need.

There are many preservatives in these products that are meant to make the food taste more appealing to your pet. Although they do serve that purpose, they also compromise your pet’s health.

Every animal needs a diet that consists of a small percentage of raw fat. This is necessary for the health of the animal’s skin and coat. Most people would be surprised to realize that many dogs and cats suffer from chronic skin problems. Although it’s natural for a dog to scratch itself from time to time, if that persists it’s an indicator that there is a problem with the dog’s skin. Most veterinarians will prescribe either a specially formulated cleanser or a topical cream to use to treat the condition when in fact all that is needed is for the owner to introduce raw fat into the diet.

There is a common concern that encouraging an animal to consume meat in a raw form will result in all kinds of ill effects including food poisoning. You simply have to consider that in the wild, this is how animals survive. They are not fed processed foods that have been cooked, dried and formed into pellets. They are eating the flesh of other animals and have no health problems.

This is because animals have a very acidic digestive system. When an animal consumes something their body makes quick work of it, breaking it up for digestion and absorption quickly. It’s not uncommon for a dog to chew on a slipper or munch away on a piece of paper. Their bodies break up the material and the dog doesn’t seem to notice that they’ve eaten something they shouldn’t have.

There are also benefits to feeding your pet a diet of raw vegetables. Although you won’t want to make this the foundation of their diet, they do add nutrients that the pet needs to survive and prosper. Adding a few raw vegetables to the animal’s raw food diet creates balanced nutrition.

It’s vital that the meat that you are serving your animal is very fresh. This means purchasing it on a very regular basis. In addition, safe handling precautions are always recommended including putting it out for a specified amount of time and no longer. If the animal doesn’t finish the portion, it should be discarded and not served again. This type of raw food diet for your pet can lead to a much longer and healthier life for them, which means more time for you to enjoy having them as part of the family.

Planning, planting, growing and harvesting a vegetable garden can be great fun for the whole family. And while you are having fun, you will be growing your own food. Having your own vegetable garden can be a very satisfying undertaking and is an excellent way to teach your children about responsibility as well.

Vegetable Garden Benefits

There are many benefits to planting your own vegetable garden and one of the most obvious ones is the harvest.

When you plant a garden that grows well, you will be able to enjoy the vegetables when they are ripe and, along with pleasing your taste buds, this will also please your grocery bill as well. Growing your own vegetables is much cheaper than buying them, so gardening will leave you with some extra money each month.

Some other benefits of having your own vegetable garden are relieving excess stress and exploring your creativity with plants.

Gardening can be great fun for the whole family and you can give your children their own gardening tasks to keep track of, as well. This will also provide a great means of exercise for the entire family.

Where Do I Plant It?

If you want a quality vegetable garden that will produce well, you are going to have to choose your garden site carefully. Make sure that your garden site gets plenty of sun each day to help your plants grow as they should.

If you do not have enough sunlight hitting your vegetable garden, it will more than likely be a flop. You should also choose a garden spot that will get enough water.

Be sure that water will not just sit in certain areas, but that the water will be able to get to the entire garden. If you are short on rain, you may have to water the garden yourself. Also try to find a garden site that has rich, healthy soil to ensure that your plants grow well.

Choosing Which Vegetables to Grow

There are many vegetables to choose from for your vegetable garden but you need to keep in mind which vegetables you like and how easy they are to grow. If your family does not like beets, you should probably choose something else to grow in your garden.

If this is your first time having a vegetable garden, you may want to stick to vegetables that are easy to grow such as tomatoes, green beans, carrots, lettuce, peas, squash and corn.

Vegetable Gardening Tips

Once you have your vegetable garden planted, you want to make sure that you keep up with the garden to be sure you get the best growth possible. It is important that you keep the weeds out of your garden, since weeds can take away nutrients and water from your plants.

You should also be sure that you do not water your garden too much or you can kill your plants with too much water. When you plant your garden, you will want to leave adequate space in between your rows so that you can cultivate your plants to stimulate growth.

If you plant your garden in a great place and make sure that you take care of it faithfully, at the end of the season, you will reap the benefits of your hard work. When you sit around your table enjoying the wonderful fresh vegetables, it will be with the pleasure of knowing that your vegetable garden was a job well done.

In our fast-paced world, safety and health are too often sacrificed in the name of haste. From toys to clothing to home repairs, we take short-cuts, and in so doing we cut out what is really important–quality. Quality of life cannot be measured simply in time-efficiency. There is also value in choosing the most beneficial methods. My grandmother used vinegar and water for window cleaner. No harmful chemicals around babies, no toxins in the air. Just good ol’ vinegar did the trick. The industry would have us think it easiest to buy whatever is offered in a bottle at the store, and so we sacrifice peace of mind for so-called convenience. Ironically, it takes less than a minute to mix equal parts white distilled vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. It is equally as easy to buy organic foods from your grocery store. Buying organic is another way we bring quality into our homes while protecting the next generation from poisons carried by many commercially-grown products.

More stores than ever are carrying organic items. From pasta to produce, you can get your food grown without pesticides and harmful chemicals. There are no excuses for taking short-cuts with your children’s health when you consider the benefits of eating organic. The size of children’s bodies makes them more susceptible to harmful toxins found in commercially grown food. Children have higher metabolisms and lower body weights and process these chemicals easily. Foods taken into our bodies during our early years contribute to the development our immune systems. Taking poor products into the body results in a poor immune system. From conception until the age of one, children are at the greatest risk to the pesticides that have been found to bind to fat. Once these pesticides have been absorbed into the body, they can stay there forever. Exposure to pesticides has been linked to minor complaints such as headache, fatigue and nausea, as well as to more serious diseases such as cancer and neurological disorders.

One concern people have with buying organic is cost. However, the cost of buying organic can be off-set by the savings in health care expenses. The question is, how would you rather spend your money? Life is about choice. As Americans we voice our values in the way we spend our money. That which matters most to us, we invest in. Invest in organic foods and invest in the future.

There are countless benefits to eating organic. Organic produce is higher in nutrients, lower in nitrates, free of artificial additives, and it tastes better. Furthermore, organic farming is better for the environment–another way the organic lifestyle benefits our children’s futures. It does not require great effort to make a change.
